Featuring dog walks around the UK – West Sussex beaches
West Sussex is situated south of London and Surrey, facing the English Channel, and very accessible by train and car, perfect for days out.
There’s quite a difference between public beaches in West and East Sussex. West Sussex beaches and land behind are low lying, mostly situated at sea level and very accessible, whereas East Sussex from Brighton towards Newhaven, and Seaford towards Eastbourne boast some of the famous white chalk cliffs that form part of the South Downs, making some beaches accessible by steep steps. However, they do have one thing in common being pebbly beaches at the backshore, softly sloping with many exposing shingle and sand at low tide.
Most beaches use the groyne system, wooden posts, and structures that help to break up the waves as they crash onto the beaches to help slow down coastal erosion.
Accessible roads run adjacent to most West Sussex beaches which means there is generally easy access, car parking spaces available as well as dedicated beach car parks.
The coastline is idyllic, particularly if you are a local resident and dog owner, as many of the beaches operate an all year round policy allowing dogs onto beaches such as Southwick, Kingston Beach Shoreham, South Lancing, and parts of Goring-by-Sea and Worthing. West Sussex Beach List is available here.
One can travel from London by train to Goring-by-Sea, Worthing, and Shoreham-by-Sea stations and enjoy a lovely day out with your dog. The walk to the beach is no more than 10 minutes from the stations. Train travel is free for well-behaved dogs.

Beautiful walks along coastal routes and sandy beaches
Worthing does not allow dogs onto the beach from 1 May to 30 September between the Splashpoint leisure centre and Heene Road, being the busy town area with the pier situated in the middle. However, you can walk either east or west and walk through to Lancing beach or Goring-by-Sea beach without interruptions if you wish.
Goring beach to Worthing is under a 2-mile walk and operates a dog ban during the summer 1 May to 30 September but are allowed near to the Sealane cafe situated between two groynes.
Worthing to Lancing is approximately 2.5 miles walk along the beach which is dotted with beach huts as much of the coastline here, and has old fishing boats pulled up onto the beach giving real traditional fishing feel to the beach.
Lancing is a popular beach with local cafes, for water sports including sailing and windsurfing, and has its own water zone to prevent bather accidents. There’s all-year-round dog walking and you can carry on walking through to Shoreham-by Sea on this beach which is approximately a further three miles.
There’s a notable eye-catching contemporary apartment built close to the beach which also has a busy cafe, open most days, ‘The Perch’.
Busy and large car park is available off the main road with a short path walk onto the beach.
Shoreham Beach is positioned at the mouth of the River Adur, again pebbles and shingle with some low-lying rock exposed. The area is home to newly constructed harbour residential homes and around the Fort area, there are new special boarding walkway areas. You can drive here and park the car. If on foot, make your way around after a walk on the beach to Harbour way and you can cross the river by the Shoreham footbridge into the high street of the quaint old small town with plenty of lively outside cafes and restaurants spaces in East Street.
The lifeguard service doesn’t support these beaches but there are lifeboat rescue services nearby stationed at Shoreham Harbour in case of emergencies. Do take time to refresh yourself with water safety tips on the RNLI website.
The immediate area is very well served with an abundance of veterinary practices available at Worthing, Shoreham-by-Sea, and Goring-by-Sea should you require in case of emergencies.
The whole stretch of West Sussex beaches from Shoreham-by-Sea through to Goring-by-Sea and beyond to Ferring are best walked when the tides are low that expose sand and shingle. Tides times available on most online meteorological websites.
NEVER LEAVE YOUR DOG UNATTENDED IN THE CAR, AT SHOPS OR ON THE BEACH
PREVENT DOG THEFT
Never leave your dog unattended in your car especially in hot weather
Beach doggie tips to remember –
- To take lots (more than usual) of fresh water and a collapsible bowl for your thirsty dog. Seawater is salty and will make your dog even more thirsty.
- Have old towels to dry your dog if they’ve been swimming. Provide them with towels to sit on, rather than the sand, and towels help to clean off the sand before going home!
- A sun canopy or umbrella shade is important, not just for you, but also for your dog who can catch sunburn as much as you can.
- You may need to use a short and/or long dog lead during restriction times, and take a dog muzzle if you prefer your dog to wear one on busier beaches. Dogs can act out character in new, unknown places often feeling anxious.
- Please remember to take your rubbish home with you. That includes dog poop which is your responsibility to clean up at all times.

To get the very best out of a special day trip, plan in advance.
- Pre-book your car park space if necessary.
- Check all local social media before setting out including if there are traffic build-ups in the area so you are not wasting time sitting in a hot car.
- Check tide times for the best times to be on the beach. We recommend two hours after high tide allows the tide to be going out, sand and shingle drying out and gives more space on the beach.
- Remember to buy sun block for you and your pet before its too hot weather, apply before leaving home.
- Ensure your dog has ventilated space in your vehicle and also sunshades protecting them from direct sunlight whilst travelling.
